As an emerging composer, Alex Shanafelt is constantly discerning new influences to help integrate contemporary, popular, and Jazz languages into his music. He often looks for methods to incorporate improvisation and performer agency in his music, questioning and altering the role of the composer and of notation. He has written a diverse repertory of concert music, ranging from small duets and trios to assorted chamber orchestras, as well as a budding catalogue of electroacoustic music.
Shanafelt has attended the Charlotte New Music Festival, the Wintergreen Summer Music Academy, the Atlantic Music Festival, and the Nief-Norf Summer Festival, where he was commissioned for his works Cartoon for Loadbang, Locomotive, Seven Haikus, and Current.ly, respectively. In addition, he has been commissioned by organizations such as Hypercube and the Fresh-Squeezed Opera Company, writing Two-Step and Game Sounds and Mirror. Shanafelt frequently seeks out collaborative and interdisciplinary projects and is currently working closely with Indianapolis-based Ballet INitiative to create new works involving contemporary dance and electronics. Furthermore, he arranges and composes for the Hickey-Shanafelt 9ollective, a Jazz nonet co-founded with trumpeter Kent Hickey, which has enjoyed opportunities to perform throughout Indiana, including Butler University, the Jazz Kitchen, and Merriam’s Playhouse. Alex was recently named a finalist in the ASCAP Foundation’s Morton Gould Young Composer Awards Competition.
Separate from composition, Shanafelt has worked with the Greenfield-Central High School Marching Band and the Carmel High School Marching Band as a music and visual instructor, and as a private lesson teacher for the former in trumpet and composition. Shanafelt attended Butler University in Indianapolis, IN where he received a BM in Music Composition under the mentorship of Michael Schelle, James Aikman, and Frank Felice, and recently graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL with a MM in Music Composition under Benjamin D. Whiting and Paul Reller, along with Jazz instruction from Chuck Owen.
